Windows Security Update Alert

Hi All,
I don't normally do this, but this is important.  Yesterday, Microsoft released a security update for Windows (2000, XP, Vista).  I strongly recommend that you immediately visit Microsoft Update (http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/) to update your computer to resolve the vulnerability.

"Microsoft recommends that customers apply the update immediately." (From MS08-067)

This vulnerability, if exploited by a virus or attacker, would allow complete compromise of Windows 2000 and XP machines, though this is mitigated on Windows Vista (as the attacker must be authenticated (have a user account on your computer) to exploit the vulnerability)).

If you would like more information please follow the below links:

Regards,
Saud.

Wallpapers from MSN

MSN has release a new site that features a collection of wallpapers that you can choose from and cycle through on your computer.  Nice way to get a variety of wallpapers for your desktop. It’s in beta, so standard caveats apply.

Talking about Amazon Web Services Blog: Coming Soon: Amazon EC2 With Windows

Awesome news in my opinion.  Amazon Web Services allows developers to build scalable web apps.  I'm glad they have decided to start using Windows and SQL.  I'm going to consider moving http://misharis.com from my hosting provider to Amazon until Microsoft gets a comparable solution.  Very cool. The 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows Server will be available and will be able to use all existing EC2 features such as Elastic IP Addresses, Availability Zones, and the Elastic Block Store. You'll be able to call any of the other Amazon Web Services from your application. You will, for example, be able to use the Amazon Simple Queue Service to glue cross-platform applications together.Existing EC2 tools will be able to launch Windows-powered EC2 instances. Once launched, you can use the Windows Remote Desktop or the rdesktop tool to access your instances.

SANS Top 20 IS Risks for 2006

Just thought I’d share this document with y’all.  It outlines the SANS Institute’s assessment of all 2006 Internet security attack targets, and which were the most heavily targeted.  I thought you would all find it a useful read.

More info can be found here: http://www.sans.org/top20/?ref=1697.

“Six years ago, the SANS Institute and the National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC) at the FBI released a document summarizing the Ten Most Critical Internet Security Vulnerabilities. Thousands of organizations relied on that list, and on the expanded Top-20 lists that followed in succeeding years, to prioritize their efforts so they could close the most dangerous holes first. The vulnerable services that led to worms like Blaster, Slammer, and Code Red have been on SANS Top20 lists.”

“The SANS Top-20 2006 is a consensus list of vulnerabilities that require immediate remediation. It is the result of a process that brought together dozens of leading security experts. They come from the most security-conscious government agencies in the UK, US, and Singapore; the leading security software vendors and consulting firms; the top university-based security programs; the Internet Storm Center, and many other user organizations. A list of participants is at the end of this document.”

Windows Home Server

Hmm…anyone want to install a Windows Server at home? J

 More info here: http://www.stopdigitalamnesia.com/.

It’s designed to be a hybrid NAS (well, actually a specific form factor PC with a bunch of disk in a RAID 5 strip set) running a stripped down version of Windows Server 2003 R2 with ‘agents’ for home PCs that facilitate backup of data from home PCs and provides monitoring of the health of the agent PCs.  Printer sharing is nice, assuming you have all your printers in a central location.  Centralized storage is a natural feature for storing shared music, pictures and videos – but the ability to access this content remotely via the web is a nice addition.

Who needs Vista? Give me XGL!

Very cool demo video of Linux's 3D desktop/graphic shell.  All I can say is maybe I should be dual-boot Vista and Linux, or perhaps I need to invest in a new hard drive and just switch them out as I boot between them.  I don't know how functionally useful any of this will be, but then the same can be said about Vista 3D fluff.  I know that I intend to have Aero Glass turned off by default in our corporate image, and disabled by policy on most machines.  However, I think, like any fringe technology, that eventually 'rich' content UIs will have a place in the office, but only once business analysis figure out how to use the functionalities to achieve business value.  Given how well new features of Office are adopted it may be ages before anything is adopted...but oh well...I'm not deploying Vista for the graphics 'fluff'.

Here is a link to some Google videos of the desktop in action: Linux XGL - Google Video.

Here are some photos if for some reason you can't view the video:

Talking about Seagate claims world record for magnetic recording density

Very interesting article on advancements in magnetic technology that should increase the data density of storage media up to 500% by 2009, which is fairly impressive...I want my 2.5TB hard drive!!!
